Race 1: Canonbury Stakes 1000m
MCLAREN (7) Has had three trials leading into today’s debut performance and all have been very good. The most recent trial was a brilliant almost seven length victory. Looks to be above average and from a strong yard with JMac riding. Very hard to go past even at the short quote on offer.
Dangers:
LANIGERA (1) Better for the debut performance and Caulfield when leading and was rundown in the straight to finish outside of the placings. He was solid in the betting and Avdulla rides today. Can bounce back. SPRING LOADED (8) Has had two trials in the past month in readiness for today’s race and both have been good. The stable has a very good record with 2yo’s. Watch betting as can feature in the finish.
Race 2: Widden Stakes 1100m
AMERCEMENT (6) Nice effort on debut in the Gimcrack getting well back in the field and hitting the line in good fashion to just just outside the placings. She was then sent to the paddock and looked good in two recent trials. The slight step up in trip is a plus and stable has a very good record with first up runners. Expecting bold showing.
Dangers:
AVON RIVER (1) Two runs for two minor placings. Last start got back and ran on soundly to the line. Has the race experience of her main rivals in this and from the Cummings yard. I would be reluctant to go against her. MAYAASEH (5) Got back and ran home soundly on debut in the Gimcrack then has has two trials including the most recent one where she was given an easy time. Was well in the market on debut, so I would be keeping an eye on the market moves with her.
Race 3: TAB Highway Handicap 1500m
NICCONITA (12) Fitter for three runs back from a spell and all three have been very good efforts getting well back in the field and finishing off strongly. Last start rattled home from the tail to finish third in similar class. Gets back again from the draw however Blake Shinn is engaged which is a big plus. Looks the one to beat for mine in what is an open race.
Dangers:
POTENT FORCE (11) Happy to forgive last start at Doomben when tailed off and go on the previous two runs which were good in similar grade. Will obtain a soft run from the draw and is a winner of this trip. Expecting a much improved showing today. BELFAST BELLA (13) First up with a good fresh record. Looked good in a recent trial in a tune up for this. This is a step up in grade from what she has been contesting however has a good overall record and McEvoy rides. Can see her in the finish today. A SNIP OF CYNDY (10) Got back and won well at this track and class last start winning at a big price. Form prior was good in weaker grade. Drawn wide however reluctant to leave out of calculations off last start victory.
Race 4: BM 72 Handicap 1400m
LJUNGBERG (1) Won first two starts this preparation in good fashion sitting midfield and sprinting well in the straight. Last start as an odds on favourite lost no supporters going down narrowly. Will obtain a soft run from the draw
Dangers:
SURE KNEE (4) Good winner last start at Canterbury sitting midfield and sprinting well to score. Previous efforts were good behind some talented gallopers. Gets back from the wide draw however expecting to be hitting the line hard. BUCEPHALUS (7) Three good trials prior to debut win at Canterbury sitting on pace and proving too strong late. This is harder however will cross from the gate and take up a forward position. Must respect from the Hawkes stable, keep an eye on betting.
Race 5: BM 78 Handicap 1400m
THY KINGDOM COME (10) Very impressive winner two starts back on the Kenso leading and winning in very quick time. Then last start lost no supporters with a game on pace effort running second as a odds on favourite. Back to 1400m and JMac gets back on for the ride are both pluses. There has also been a couple of gear changes expecting a very bold performance today. Goes close.
Dangers:
POETIC CHARMER (6) Very consistent performer finishing no worse than second in his past five starts. Last start narrowly went down on pace in another game effort. Up to 1400m suits as does the wide draw. Can be fighting out the finish. THE AVENGER (3) Fitter for first up effort which was good getting back and running on well to finish just outside the placings. Up to 1400m suits and has a good second up record and also from the Waller yard so must be respected. THE KOOL VINNIE (1) Good first up running on to finish third in a race Poetic Charmer finished second in. Fitter for that effort and has a good record at the track and the trip. Big weight however can feature in the finish with the right run. Keep safe.
Race 6: Expressway Stakes 1200m
ALIZEE (6) Very impressive first up win as short priced favourite sitting back in the field and sprinting well to score in a quick time. Has since trailed well and should be fitter for the first up run and form last preparation was very good at much higher level. Drawn to get a good run behind the speed and should be very hard to beat.
Dangers:
HARTNELL (1) One of the stars of Australian racing in the last few years. Has a good fresh record and showed his class last preparation winning the G1 Epsom in excellent time. This trip is abit short for his best however has the class to make presence felt. LE ROMAIN (3) First up and three time winner fresh. Two recent trials have been good and form last preparation at G1 level and The Everest more than good enough to take a race like this out if ready to go.
Race 7: BM 88 Handicap 1500m
GIRL TUESDAY (9) Very well bread and unbeaten winning four from four career starts. Has since gone for a spell and looked good in two recent trials. Raced over this track and trip last preparation winning very impressively. This is a big ask winning at this trip first up however has a touch of class and a bit more upside than a couple of these.
Dangers:
SEAWAY (3) First up and only finished worse than second twice. He raced well at G2 level last preparation in QLD. He has been given a quiet trial in preparation for this and expecting to be hitting the line very strongly late. SWEET DEAL (6) Very consistent mare and happy to forgive last start and go on the previous start winning at Randwick in this class. Should obtain a nice run from the draw which is a plus however will need to find a length to beat the top two selections I feel. Best of the rest.
Race 8: BM 78 Handicap 2000m
NAHUEL (7) Has won the last two starts in impressive fashion sitting just behind the leaders and sprinting well in the straight to score. Is a winner up to 2300m so the rise in trip is no issue and peaks in fitness today for mine. Gets in well at the weights for a race that doesn’t look a lot harder than last start. Well backed when markets went up. One to beat.
Dangers:
ISLAND MISSILE (4) Three seconds in a row and all three have been good runs getting back and working to the line well. Fit, from strong yard and will obtain a soft run from the draw. Cannot leave out of calculations. ASTERIUS (1) Sent out as favourite last start and was no match in running second. Is a peak fitness now and is always around the mark in these class of races. Big weight however can feature. BOTTI (17) First up run was good then second up better than it looks on paper. Getting to a suitable trip now and di race at G2 level last preparation. Could surprise.
Race 9: BM 88 Handicap 1200m
PARET (3) Talented performer who was good first up working to the line well. Gets up to a more suitable distance range and has a very good second up record. Three of his four career wins have been at this venue. Last preparation ran well at group level. Looks the one to beat today.
Dangers:
MAXIMUS (6) First up today and fitter for two recent trials. Very good winner three starts back scoring in very quick time at Randwick. Good overall record, drawn well and Berry rides. A lot to like about his chances today. ALL TOO ROYAL (8) Racing very well at present. Big winner two starts back at Canterbury when very well backed then last start won well again leading from barrier to box here. Steps up in grade, however fit, inform and races on pace. Can be in the finish. PERFORMER (10) First up and fitter for two recent trials. For last preparation was at group level when not beaten far by Written By & Lean Mean Machine which reads very well for this. Has very good ability and was well in the market in the Golden Slipper. Can win. Keep an eye on the betting as that will tell the story of his chances.
