TAB History
The TAB (an acronym for ‘Totalisator Agency Board’) was established as a statutory body in 1961 under the Racing Act, enabling it to conduct off-course totalisators for thoroughbred and harness racing. This allowed punters to legally wager on these events without having to front up to the track (Greyhound racing was added to the fold in 1966).
The TABs were originally all government-owned, beginning with the State government-owned Victorian Totalisator Agency Board, which was formed in March 1961. Since then they’ve all been privatised, beginning with the Victorian TAB in 1994. That also marked the time when Tabcorp was first listed on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX).
In 2004, the Tabcorp acquired Tab Limited, the New South Wales-based wagering media and gaming company.
