The West Coast Eagles need to keep the wins ticking over if they want to play finals and this week Carlton is the task for them.
The Eagles currently find themselves ninth on the ladder behind Essendon, but it is only on percentage, and a narrow gap at that. The fixture has fallen in their favour this week – of the other teams on their level, Melbourne and St Kilda play each other, while the Bombers face ladder-leading Adelaide. Meanwhile, they have been drawn to play the team in 17th, the Carlton Blues, who many are predicting will sink to ‘win’ the spoon. The Eagles however have only won one of their last three, and are by no means a sure thing to beat anyone.
As for Carlton, they’ve lost eight consecutive matches since their memorably win over GWS back in Round 12. With only three matches left for the year, and Hawthorn and Sydney the names to come after West Coast, they’re unlikely to break that streak. Blues fans will still be happy with the year though, even if they finish on the bottom, as they’ve shown some progress and development. It hasn’t led to many wins just yet, but the hope will be that it eventually does.
West Coast have dropped all of Chris Masten, Malcolm Karpany and Will Schofield from their side this week. Matt Priddis, Lewis Jetta and Nathan Vardy are the inclusions.
Carlton have only one change, they’ve lost Caleb Marchbank to injury and will replace him with Tom Williamson.
West Coast have won the last two between these sides, and three of the last four at this ground. They’ll win again but Carlton’s improved defence could keep it relatively close, so $2.30 for a 1-39 West Coast win looks the best value available.
