Sydney will look to continue their march towards September and should have a fairly easy time of it when they host Fremantle at the SCG on Saturday of Round 21.
If you didn’t know Sydney had opened the season 0-6, you’d think they were the best team in the game right now, and there’s an argument that they should be anyway. In the time since losing those first six matches of the year, they’ve lost only two more, both of them to Hawthorn, both of them by small margins. That period has included wins over three of the current top four teams in GWS, Geelong and Richmond, but they’ll have to wait till next week for a shot at Adelaide. Last week it was a very impressive 46-point win against Geelong, albeit a Geelong side with no Patrick Dangerfield.
Fremantle have had a pretty poor season made to look a little shinier by the fact they’ve had a few small-margin wins here and there. While they have eight wins total for the season, only half of those have come by more than a goal. The fact they’ve got the third-worst percentage in the league better reflects where they are at. That said, they had a solid performance against the Gold Coast Suns last week resulting in a 23-point win. Nat Fyfe’s excellent recent form helps things too.
No changes for Sydney this week who have found a settled side.
Fremantle lose Hayden Crozier to concussion and Brady Grey to injury, and have dropped Jonathon Griffin. They’re bringing in Sean Darcy, Matthew Taberner and Josh Deluca.
Fremantle have won two of the last three between these clubs, but don’t expect that to be a factor in this one. The gap in quality between these two sides is about as wide as you’ll find in the game right now, and while it’s not great value, $1.40 for a Sydney win by 40+ looks the only likely result.
