Hawthorn host Sydney in a Friday night meeting between two teams who have a storied rivalry and who are both in good form of late.
The Hawks, perhaps unfortunately, have lost too many games already this year for finals to be a realistic possibility. They have a 7-10 record at the moment, and could feasibly finish as good as 12-10, but even that is unlikely to result in finals qualification. Over the past five matches they’ve had three wins, a draw, and a loss by only three points – if lucky was a little kinder, they could easily have gone 5-0. It’s a stark turnaround from losing the first four matches of the year. They’ve found form, and encouragingly, it’s been off the back of improvement from younger players.
While Hawthorn may be in decent form, Sydney are the form team of the competition and comfortably so. They have won ten of their last eleven matches since starting the season 0-6, and as a result have risen to sixth on the table. They’ve got seven wins on the trot coming into this match, last week’s being a 42-point smashing of St Kilda. The only team they’ve lost to since Round 6 is the side they play tonight.
The Hawks seem to have found a settled line-up and aren’t making any changes to the team for tonight’s game.
Sydney have one change – they’ve dropped Daniel Robinson and brought in Will Hayward.
Neither side can claim dominance in this fixture in recent times. The last two have been decided by a goal or less. In the last five between these two teams it’s been the travelling team that wins each time – and that bodes well for Sydney tonight. We’ll back the Swans by 1-39 @ $2.00.
