GWS vs Melbourne

GWS are at their home-away-from-home in Canberra and hosting the Melbourne Demons there in a match that will have a big impact on this year’s finals.

The Giants entered this season as the unanimous premiership favourites after a strong 2016 that had them looking like they’d only get stronger.

However a horrific run of injuries this year, couple with just some average form at times, has left them a little off the pace.

They’re still doing quite well – sitting in third on the ladder and every chance to get a top two finish.

However, they’ve got just one win from their last five matches. They must find better form, and fast.

Melbourne on the other hand have played mostly good footy during the year but had one of their most disappointing results last week.

When the siren blew, they found themselves beaten by lowly North Melbourne, for the second time this year and seventeenth time in a row.

They can still boast five wins from their eight games since the bye though and are in the box seat to play finals.

After this match though they face St Kilda, Collingwood and Brisbane. They probably need at least three wins from this last four to really be comfortable.

The Giants have another big injury blow this week losing Jeremy Cameron, and will also be missing Will Setterfield though concussion, while Dawson Simpson and Harry Perryman have been dropped.

They’ve got some valuable inclusions though – Steve Johnson, Shane Mumford and Jacob Hopper are all in, and Brett Deledio will debut for the club.

Melbourne have lost Jesse Hogan to a broken collarbone, dropped Jack Trengove and Jay Kennedy-Harris, and are resting Mitch Hannan.

Bernie Vince and Nathan Jones are back in the side, Cameron Pedersen recalled to replace Hogan, and Corey Maynard set to debut.

Melbourne have a better recent record against the Giants than most, having beaten them in the last two matches between these sides.

They’re the outsiders here, but arguably shouldn’t be. $2.88 for them to win by 1-39 looks like good value.
