Gary Ablett will celebrate game number 300 when Gold Coast host North Melbourne on Saturday afternoon.
The Suns have been a difficult team to predict so far this year, flicking back and forth between poor and powerful. They’ve had some history making wins – two over Hawthorn, and one each over Geelong and West Coast – but have also had some poor weeks. In the last fortnight on the other hand they’ve dropped one to Carlton at home and last week were undermanned and overrun by St Kilda.
North Melbourne in many ways have been similar – both of them are young teams, and both prone to a little inconsistency. Most frustrating for North fans this year has got to be the club’s inability to win the close ones. They’ve lost four games by less than a goal. One of those came just last week, falling a single point short of beating the Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium. The Roos are 17th, but would be sitting comfortably inside the top eight if they had kicked just one more goal in each of those games.
Gold Coast’s big inclusion this week is Gary Ablett, due to play his 300th game after missing it through injury last week. They’ve also got Matt Rosa and Ryan Davis coming in, with Matt Shaw, Darcy Macpherson and Jesse Joyce all dropped.
North have lost Ben Cunnington to a suspension and are managing Trent Dumont – they’ve brought in Mitch Hibberd and Corey Wagner. The Roos have won the last two against the Suns, but before that it was three in a row to the Suns.
Although it’s tempting to pick the Suns as a side that can rise given Ablett’s milestone, North at $2.30 to win is a great price.
