Geelong vs Hawthorn

Luke Hodge's 300th

Luke Hodge has been a part of many epic tussles between the Hawks and the Cats, dating back to the Hawks’ victory in the 2008 grand final.

For most of the time they’ve both been near the pointy end of the standings, however, this year while the Cats are still near the top, the Hawks look likely to miss finals for the first time in eight years.

While Geelong have been a successful side this year, like the rest of the best sides in the comp, they’ve still had their flaws and have given away wins that they should not. They had a three-round stretch earlier in the year where they dropped games against Essendon, Collingwood and Gold Coast. However they have rebounded in the time since, they’ve won five, drawn one and lost one of their seven matches since then.

Hawthorn have also been in good form lately, or at least, better form than they have shown in the early part of the year. They have two wins and a draw against GWS from their last three fixtures, which is easily their best stretch of form for the season so far. Finals is really only a mathematical possibility for them at this stage, but they’ll still play like they’ve got a chance – why not?

The Cats get stronger this week with Daniel Menzel and Scott Selwood both back from injury, Wylie Buzza and Zach Guthrie dropped.

There are no changes for the Hawks.

Geelong have won the last three in a row between these two sides, including a dominant 86-point victory earlier in the year. Hawthorn have improved though and the margin shouldn’t be as big this time around especially when you consider the occasion for Luke Hodge. Geelong to win by 1-39 points at $2.20 is good value.
