Carlton vs Sydney

Carlton will look to prevent Sydney getting their first win of the season when they host them at the MCG on Saturday.

The Blues are ahead of the Swans at the moment – in fact, everyone is, as the Sydney side sit in last place on the ladder.

Carlton haven’t been in great form themselves but did get an upset win in the wet over Essendon in Round 3.

They’ve generally been well beaten in every other game they’ve played, although they’ve shown good defensive ability for a young team at times.

That was not the case last week though when they lost by 15 goals to Port Adelaide on Friday night – they’ll be looking to bounce back and put in a much more competitive effort than that.

Sydney on the other hand have faced some tough opponents in their first five matches of the year but can’t blame that for being winless.

They’re clearly not the team they were last year, with injuries exposing a lack of depth in the best side and a number of their best players underperforming.

Both sides have made a number of changes. Carlton will debut former Docker Alex Silvagni and have brought in Matthew Kreuzer, Billie Smedts and Nick Graham.

Harrison Macreadie is being ‘managed’, while Andrew Phillips, Cameron Polson and Jarrod Pickett have all been dropped from the team.

The Swans have recalled Jeremy Laidler, Brandon Jack and Nic Newman, with Jordan Foote dropped, and Kieren Jack and Harry Marsh to miss through injury.

Sydney have boasted seven consecutive wins over the Blues in recent years, and haven’t lost to Carlton since 2011.

While the Swans are certainly a more vulnerable team at the moment than they have been at any time since then, they should have more than enough class to cut up Carlton.

Swans -24.5 is our call.
