Brisbane have a huge test ahead of them when they host the GWS Giants at the Gabba on Saturday.
This is a match-up of the AFL’s bottom-ranked side against a team that, if the win, will find themselves at No.1 on the ladder. However, as results regularly remind us this year, footy is an unpredictable game and it would be unwise to assume the Giants will romp to victory.
Brisbane may only be 2-10 in terms of their win-loss record, but they’ve hit good form in recent weeks. They got their second win of the season over Fremantle and then last week were competitive for large parts of the game against Port Adelaide. Bring that kind of effort again to this one and while a win isn’t likely, they at least won’t embarass themselves.
The Giants have had a good year in a lot of ways but many of their wins have seen them only just narrowly scrape by. They were bound to slip up eventually and in their last start they did, getting knocked off by Carlton by a single point. That was two weeks ago – they’ve had the bye since then and would have spent a decent chunk of that time re-evaluating where they are at.
The Lions have two changes this week and one of them is to bring in another young debutant in Alex Witherden. They’ve also recalled Rohan Bewick, while Marco Paparone has been dropped from the side and Ryan Harwood will miss through injury.
GWS are only making a single change, with Nick Haynes ready to return, and Harry Perryman dropped to make room.
The two sides have only met five times, and the Giants have won the last three, all by handy margins.
